By: Ian Reader
Reader (religious studies, Lancaster U., England) describes the 1,400-kilometer pilgrimage, visiting 88 temples, around the edge of Shikkoku, the fourth largest island in the Japanese archipelago.

He is primarily concerned with the activities of a variety of actors and forces that have influenced the development and nature of the pilgrimage, with the landscape and framework that shapes it, and with the meanings that are thereby constructed in the eyes of participants. Annotation
